SALFORD GROUP CROWNED NATIONAL PUBLIC SPACE CHAMPS

The transformation of a housing estate known locally as the dog track into a colourful, clean community by dedicated residents has been rewarded with first prize in our ‘A Picture of Change’ competition.

The announcement was made by Minister at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, Phil Hope, this morning at the ‘Delivering Sustainable Communities’ Summit in Manchester.

Albion Estate was earmarked for possible clearance when its Residents’ Group decided to get the whole community, young and old, involved in an ongoing project which included clean–ups, planning of a new community garden, putting up hanging baskets and planting seeds and trees.

The group will put their total prize money of £6,000 ( £5,000 national prize and £1,000 regional prize) towards their next venture, tackling graffiti with a large scale mural project.

The project was one of nine regional entries to qualify for the national final in the search to find England’s top community space. The competition, organised by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, in partnership with Groundwork and sponsored by Barclays SiteSavers, ran for four weeks on this web site towards the end of last year.

Local groups were invited to tell their story in words and pictures on how they have made their community a cleaner, safer and greener place to live in. Over 400 entries were received from projects targeting anti-social behaviour; groups creating community green space and allotments and residents who organise neighbourhood tidy-ups.
