HOME ZONES |
A home zone is a street or
group of streets designed primarily to meet the
interests of pedestrians and cyclists rather
than motorists, opening up the street for social
use. The key to creating a home zone is to develop
street design that makes drivers feel it is normal
to drive slowly and carefully. Features often
include traffic calming, shared surfaces, trees
and planters, benches and play areas. The Home
Zone website shows schemes that operate throughout
the UK, with case studies, news and information
on how they are funded.

LIVING STREETS |
Living
Streets is a major initiative of The Pedestrians
Association. They have influenced road safety
regulation and have campaigned to introduce many
schemes such as the Walk to School campaign,
Home Zones and pedestrianised areas. Living Streets
is not anti-car but they are passionate about
making your local surroundings a happy extension
of your home life rather than a threat that prioritises
traffic and isolates pedestrians. The Living
Streets website has policy statements, a free
newsletter, articles and a section on how to
volunteer.

CLEAR ZONES
|
Clear
Zones was originally a Foresight initiative developed
by the Foresight Transport Panel, but now has
a number of other partners including the Department
for Transport, the Department of Trade and Industry
and Transport and Travel Research Ltd. A Clear
Zone is a defined urban area which exploits new
technologies and operational approaches to improve
quality of life and support economic growth,
whilst minimising the adverse impacts of its
transport systems. The website is primarily for
local authorities, businesses, transport operators
and retailers, and gives policy guidance, case
studies and some information on possible funding
streams.
