BRITAIN IN BLOOM

Organised by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), Britain in Bloom has grown into the largest horticultural campaign in Europe. Every year, hundreds of communities are involved, from tiny rural villages to the largest cities, all bringing a great deal of horticultural skill and huge enthusiasm to one common aim: to regenerate local
environments, both locally and nationally, by the imaginative planting of trees and shrubs, flowers and landscaping and by dealing with local environmental issues, such as litter, graffiti and vandalism.

For advice on how to enter the Britain in Bloom competition and for more details of the campaign visit www.rhs.org.uk/britaininbloom/index.asp or for access to the wide range of services and advice from the RHS visit www.rhs.org.uk or telephone 020 7834 4333

THINK! ROAD SAFETY

Think! Is a Department for Transport campaign to get the public to think more about road safety. On the Think Road Safety website you can find news of the latest campaigns and road safety advice. You can download leaflets, factsheets and posters for more information and there are links to other sites you might find useful. There are special sections for parents, teachers, police officers and road safety officers to help get the right road safety message across. And they've provided lots of facts and figures for journalists and students researching road safety issues.

There is also a section for children, including an interactive Hedgehog and Arrive Alive sites, where they can play games, download materials or watch television ads. Visit www.thinkroadsafety.gov.uk

SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL

Sustrans the sustainable transport charity, works on practical projects to encourage people to walk, cycle and use public transport for health, safety and environmental reasons. Their aim is to create a Safe Route to School for every child in the UK. The Safe Routes to School website gives information on School Travel Plans, has case studies, a resource library and you can subscribe to their newsletter. The site is useful for teachers, pupils, governors, parents and local authorities.

Visit www.saferoutestoschools.org.uk. They also provide an information service on 0117 915 0100.

LEARNING THROUGH LANDSCAPES

Learning through Landscapes (LTL) campaign for children's right to decent school grounds and help make school grounds better places. LTL believe that many people do not understand the importance of school grounds to children's learning and development. But they are essential, providing unique opportunities for healthy exercise, creative play, and making friends; for learning through doing; for putting children in touch with the natural world. The LTL website deals with all issues relating to school grounds, and is useful for teachers, governors and local authorities.
